Q: After I eliminate data from my computer, where can I donate or dispose of it?

A: Great list of donation centers near you: http://www.techsoup.org/resources/index.cfm?action=resource.view_summary&resourcelist_id=144&style=recycle&set=products

Q: Does Microsoft have a program for free Windows licenses for schools for my donated computer?

A: Yes.  Please see: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/update/donatecomputer.mspx

Q: Does Data Eliminator wipe the empty spaces between files?

A: Yes.

Q: Does Data Eliminator wipe the swap file?

A: Yes.

Q: Does Data Eliminator wipe the index.dat file?

A: Yes.

Q: Does Data Eliminator wipe the NTFS metadata?

A: Yes.

Q: Will Data Eliminator work properly if my BIOS is old or broken?

A: Yes.  Data Eliminator will still work properly if your BIOS does not detect all of the hard disks in your computer, or if your BIOS has disk size limitations. The BIOS need only be capable of starting Data Eliminator from the boot media.  Data Eliminator is not subject to any DOS limitations because Data Eliminator is based on Linux.

Q: Can I be absolutely sure that Data Eliminator works properly?

A: No.  There are some situations in which a Data Eliminator failure could go unnoticed, for example:

  • Data Eliminator may fail to detect a hard disk in a computer with many hard disks. You must check whether Data Eliminator actually detected all hard disks in a computer.
  • Your hardware caches writes or otherwise does not implement a functional write barrier. This is likely to happen with battery-backed large-memory RAID controllers or defective hard disks.

Q: I used Data Eliminator and my C drive disappeared. Why did this happen?

A: Data Eliminator erases the partition table, which causes all drive letters to disappear.

Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows 2003 will automatically create a partition during installation.  Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME might require that you use the FDISK program on the startup media to "create a primary DOS partition", which you must also format.

A:\> fdisk
A:\> format c:

Q: I started up Data Eliminator and is displayed on my screen but my keyboard does not work.  Why did this happen?

A: Sometimes USB keyboards are not recognized on an older computer.  Try using a PS2 style keyboard if possible.  This fixes the problem 99% of the time.
